Chapter 24: Mary’s Story

“I wrote a letter to my husband... he came to Silent Hill looking for me.” Mary explained and blinked her eyes, as if holding back tears. Slowly the room around us shifted. The paintings vanished and I found myself in what appeared to be a hotel room, one that looked out over the lake.

“Her husband, James Sunderland had forgotten that he killed her.” Maria smirked walking over to sit in a chair in front of a television. “He thought she died of her illness!”

“I had to make him remember that he killed me... and I wanted to make him pay.” Mary practically whispered, slowly backing up and sitting down on the bed.

“So Dahlia split Mary in half... creating me.” Maria pointed to herself. “I started out as only half a human... in order to become whole, and bring Mary back to life we had to complete what we started— to lock James in a hell of his own design.”

“But to do that we had to get James to face me, with the full knowledge of what he’d done.” Mary closed her eyes, tears running down her cheeks.

“So we some fun and messed with his mind.” Maria laughed. “James Sunderland had to watch me die again and again...” she trailed off and smiled, sending a shiver down my spine. “But eventually he realized what he had done.” The television crackled to life, showing a grainy picture of a man smothering a woman before going black once more. I stepped back, ending up right against the large window as I watched the two.

“We talked... and I realized I didn’t hate him anymore. So I... I forgave him.”

“You let him get away!” Maria yelled, slamming her hands down on the chair’s arms while glaring at Mary. “You allowed him to leave, you gave him peace!”

“I love James. He made me happy. I guess the part of me that can feel love stayed inside —while all my hate went into you.” Mary whispered, turning away from Maria.

“You trapped us in this hell!” Maria yelled, lunging at Mary, as if to claw out her eyes. However she just passed through Mary like a hand through smoke. “It’s your fault we are stuck here!”

“When Dahlia realized that we let James she cut us off from our power source.” Mary explained. “Now we can’t leave.”
